All of the music from this week's show comes from artists based in the San Francisco area. Many of them perform at a new event called Shift/Tilt in the Bay Area. Click here for more info on upcoming Shift/Tilt events.

The opening quote is lifted from Warren Ellis' seminal comic epic Transmetropolitan, which is a vile, disgusting and utterly brilliant piece of writing. I've been told Warren, who's from England, loves the city of San Francisco. I really need to get out there one of these days...

I've made a little progress on the Wordpress installation -- and a big thank you goes out to Evgeniy Kaschenko and everyone else who emailed to help -- but I haven't had a chance to work on it this weekend, as I hosted my first Wii party on Friday, which was a huge success, and spent the rest of the weekend either sleeping it off or working on other web sites.

In the meantime, I've decided to point the daveslounge.com home page directly to the old Liberated Syndication page, which should let me work on the new site in the background. It will also let me put together the next show in the meantime. I hope to have the new site ready in the next week or two.

Thanks for being patient with me, folks.

Folks,

I've been busy putting together the new Wordpress-based Dave's Lounge web site since the weekend, so I haven't been able to put a show together this week. At some point in the next few days I plan to move the site onto its new platform, and it will probably be a little messy for a few days. Trust me, though -- it'll be worth it when it's done.

Further announcements are forthcoming...

All the music in this week's playlist comes from the Magnatune compilation Downtempo Chill by DJ Cary. The artists are all part of the Magnatune label, which promotes independent artists with a shareware-style "try before you buy" model. You can listen to entire albums on their web site and choose how much you want to pay for each album. It's a fairly unique model, and that's kind of a shame, really.

Click here for the full compilation.

In the interest of full disclosure, Magnatune is not paying me for any sales. They did, however, give me full access to their music catalog, which is podsafe, though you'll need to contact Magnatune to download MP3s for podcast play. Click here for more info.

  3. Drop Trio, "Slap Jack"
  4. Shiva in Exile, "Breathing"
  5. TranceVision, "Enertia"
  6. Falling You, "The Art of Possession"

I've decided that it's time to make some major changes to the Dave's Lounge web site. These changes will take place some time in the next two weeks. I will attempt to do this without disrupting the current RSS feed, but I can't make any guarantees on this. Keep an eye (and an ear) out for details...

This week's opening monologue was somewhat inspired by this post by Danah Boyd. I met Danah a year and a half ago at a podcasting seminar at Duke University. She writes some very interesting stuff about social media and its impact on our culture. Worth seeking out if you have the time.

The snow began falling this morning in Durham, North Carolina, which usually shuts much of the city and surrounding area down. It degraded into rain by the afternoon, but that still gave me enough time to put together a quick show to make up for Tuesday's DSL outage. Hope you enjoy it.

This week's episode features the music of Miami-based downtempo artist Raul Ramirez, a former drummer in numerous rock bands who began a solo project and has produced two excellent downtempo CDs. When I listened to these CDs, I knew there was no way I could pick just one song to play. There is some great music here, folks.

Dave's Lounge has returned for 2007 -- no thanks to Verizon DSL, who seem to have throttled the upload speed from my house down to about 40 Kbps. Once again, I'm uploading this show using the Panera Bread Wi-Fi spot down the street.

I hope everyone out there enjoyed the holidays. The holiday here lasted a little longer than expected, but only because I had so many emails and music submissions to sort through -- and I'm still going through them, so if you're waiting for a reply from me, sit tight. Lots of great music is ahead this year.

Thanks to everyone who sent feedback on the iTunes links. Based on your feedback, I have decided to bring back iTunes links and including them with eMusic, Amazon, CD Baby and other links as appropriate. Nobody likes DRM, but everybody likes choices, so I will try to give you more choices to help support artists in the future. I've also taken the Dave's Lounge Shop down for the time being, but I plan to bring it back soon, hopefully in a much better form than it was.

Oh, and if you dig Dave's Lounge, please Digg Dave's Lounge. I'll include the link to the Digg podcast page for Dave's Lounge at the bottom of the show notes and in the sidebar. If you have a Digg account, you should check out their new podcast section. It's pretty slick.

So I've decided to take the rest of the year off, but before I go, I wanted to let y'all hear a little piece I recorded for AMPed, the Association of Music Podcasting's weekly show. They're doing a 2006 retrospective that's coming out on New Year's Day, and they asked us to submit one of our favorite tunes from 2006. I don't think any of you will be surprised with my selection...

Natalie Walker, "Urban Angel"

Enjoy the end of the year, everyone. I'll talk to y'all again in 2007.

Back from a long hiatus with a nice long show for you this week...

I got something in the mail a few weeks ago that I didn't expect -- a commission check from Linkshare, the company running the iTunes Affiliate Program. As you may recall, I dropped the iTunes links and started promoting eMusic because Linkshare appeared to stop sending checks and gave me the runaround when I asked them about. Of course, now that I've actually gotten a check, I'm starting to wonder if I judged them a little harshly. I talk about that in this week's show, and I'd like to hear your thoughts on this. Send me an email at daveslounge@gmail.com and let me know what you think...

Folks, I know you're all waiting for a new show, and I apologize for making you wait so long yet again, but I am really backed up right now, and I didn't want to put together a subpar show, and that's exactly what the show I was trying to make tonight would have been.

Give me a little more time. I will try to get this train back on its tracks very soon...
