Wed, 29 November 2006 So I let the holidays get away from me, and I haven't had time to record show #66. Still, I didn't want to make y'all wait another week for something new, so hopefully this little collection of cool remixes will hold you over until I can sit down and put together the next show... Tue, 21 November 2006 Just a heads-up to everyone waiting for Dave's Lounge #66... I've decided to wait until Friday to record this week's show, as I have that day off and can dedicate a little more time to it. It will be a little bit longer than usual, too, as I'm taking next week off. I usually record on Tuesday nights, but next Tuesday is my birthday. If you've emailed me in the last week or two, sit tight. I've fallen behind in my correspondence yet again, but I plan to respond to everyone very soon. Wed, 15 November 2006 I didn't include the following rant in the show this week, because... well, because Dave's Lounge isn't really a ranting kind of show. Nevertheless, I felt this was something that needed to be said... You may have heard about Zune, Microsoft's new portable media player that will attempt to knock the iPod off its perch. What you might not have heard was that Microsoft struck a deal with Universal Music Group, one of the Big Four major labels, that will pay UMG approximately one dollar for every Zune sold. This was a result of UMG's refusal to license its catalog to Microsoft without a deal like this in place, because as UMG Chairman and CEO Doug Morris put it, "These devices are just repositories for stolen music, and they all know it. So it's time to get paid for it." Some reports indicate that similar deals with the other three major labels are forthcoming, though that hasn't been confirmed. Honestly, I fail to see how anyone at Microsoft could think that this is a good precedent. All this deal does is legitimize the RIAA's stance that all online music is "stolen" music, which is about as far from the truth as you could imagine. Plus, this deal basically gives money to an organization that now makes a good portion of its money by extorting file sharers through lawsuits and intimidation. Paying for a Zune now means funding more RIAA attacks on consumer rights through any legal means they see fit. And how much of that money will end up in the artists' hands? UMG says half, but the way most record deals are set up, that half will end up going toward recouping the advance, which means the bands themselves will never see a dime. And what about the indie artists, who get shafted by default because of this deal? Think about this: if you give a song to a friend through the Zune's wireless connection, the Zune software automatically puts a DRM wrapper on that song that prevents your friend from listening to it more than 3 times -- even if the song is legitimately available for free on the Internet. If the song is available under a Creative Commons license, as Dave's Lounge is, the Zune might violate that license with this DRM. I won't even begin to discuss Microsoft's stubborn refusal to include any sort of podcast support in any of its software... Folks, if you were thinking about buying a Zune, please don't. We need to send a message to Microsoft that we refuse to give money to any business that shows no respect to its customers, even if it's just the tiniest fraction of each sale. The only way to stop the RIAA is to stop giving them money. Anything else is just lip service. If you'd like an alternative, consider this. For the price of a new
Zune, you can get a very capable 20GB Archos media player Of course, if you already have an MP3 player, more power to you. Just remember that the Zune is not an upgrade. We should be moving forward,
not backward. You can read more about this horrible Zune-Universal deal here. Okay, rant over. On to the music, none of which is stolen, despite what Doug Morris would have you think... Playlist for Dave's Lounge #65:

Wed, 8 November 2006 ![]() You cannot imagine how stoked I am to bring you this week's show. Last week, I secured permission from Nettwerk Records to play one song each from two of their artists -- Ivy and Delerium. You may recall that Nettwerk broke away from the RIAA last January and decided to fund the defense of a music fan sued for sharing files over the Internet. At the time, Nettwerk CEO Terry McBride declared, "Suing music fans is not the solution, it's the problem." The label then decided to sell MP3s through its online store, Werkshop, and submitted a large portion of its catalog to eMusic. Nettwerk didn't have to work with me when I contacted them, but this is a forward-thinking label, and I'm thrilled to play their artists on this show. I sincerely hope this won't be the last time a Nettwerk artist gets played on a podcast. Be sure to support their Save the Music Fan campaign, because music lovers shouldn't be penalized for sharing culture. Ivy and Delerium aren't the only recognizable names on this week's show. Moloko and Morcheeba both popped up recently on the Podsafe Music Network. Is your music up there yet? Playlist for Dave's Lounge #64:

Wed, 1 November 2006 A few weeks ago, one of my listeners sent me a long list of downtempo tunes he found on eMusic. Some of them were so good that I had to play them on this show. (Thanks, Kevin!) It got me to thinking, though, that he couldn't be the only one to have found such great tunes on eMusic. So I'd like to put this question out to everyone listening -- what great downtempo and trip hop tunes have you found on eMusic? Email me at daveslounge@gmail.com with some tunes you've found, and if I like them, I'll play them on the show. If you're not an eMusic subscriber yet, click here to sign up for a free trial eMusic account through Dave's Lounge and get 25 free MP3s. It's a great way to support the podcast and support independent music. Playlist for Dave's Lounge #63:

Wed, 25 October 2006 Well, my internet connection at home isn't letting me upload files anywhere -- strangely enough, downloading files isn't affected -- so I had to upload this episode at a Panera Bread Wi-Fi hotspot this morning. I'm going to have a nice long talk with folks at Verizon later tonight... A quick follow-up on Elevator, a band I played on last week's show. As I had expected, the group is no longer together, but its lead singer, New Zealand native Julia Grace, has embarked on a solo career. You can hear more of Julia's music on her Myspace page. As it turns out, Elevator was described by one writer as "a worship band." I had suspected they might have been a Christian group, judging from the lyrics, but I didn't really know for certain, and really, the song itself was too good a fit for this show regardless. (Thanks for the info, Mario!) This week's first artist, MoShang, was recently interviewed on The Chillcast with Anji Bee. Click here to check out that interview. Playlist for Dave's Lounge #62:

Tue, 24 October 2006 Just FYI: Episode #62 is completed, but I'm having trouble uploading it to LibSyn's server this evening. After some testing, it appears to be a problem on my end. I'll try to get it uploaded as soon as possible... Category: general -- posted at: 11:22 PM Comments[4] |
Wed, 18 October 2006 It took a while to get this one together, and for a while, I wasn't sure it was going to get done tonight. One thing after another came up that kept me from recording, but I somehow managed to get through it all and get this one done. I even made this show a little longer for y'all, since you've been so patient. You'll recognize a lot of names in this lineup, but that's just because they all make great music. I hope you enjoy this one as much as the last 60... Playlist for Dave's Lounge #61:

Mon, 16 October 2006 So I came back from an out-of-town road trip today, and I had planned to settle in, finish re-installing all my audio software, and put together the next show. When I got home this afternoon, I found my parents in my house. They were rearranging furniture. All my computer equipment was scattered everywhere... That said, this is a temporary state, and I will do everything in my power to get a show out this week. That's a promise to all of you out there who faithfully stayed subscribed during this unexpected lull in the show. Dave's Lounge is still open. Keep an eye out for Show #61 later this week. Mon, 9 October 2006 Folks, My new laptop crashed today. Something went horribly wrong, the system files got corrupted, and I have no idea how to fix it -- or whether or not it can even be fixed without wiping out everything on the hard drive already. So it may be a few more weeks before I can get a new episode of Dave's Lounge out to everyone. Sorry about this, folks. I promise that I'll be back with a new show as soon as I can. -Dave Category: general -- posted at: 2:40 PM Comments[8] |
Tue, 3 October 2006 Sorry, folks. The furntiure's getting rearranged around the house this week, and my audio equipment is scattered everywhere, so I won't be able to do a show this week. I'm trying as hard as I can to keep up with everything right now, and I will try harder to get #61 ready for everyone soon. Incidentally, I got a note from Cling, the band that led off Dave's Lounge #59, and they inform me that eMusic has been pretty good to them: See you are an affiliate of eMusic as well, we actually made more by giving
our tunes away (so to speak) via eMusic than we would have made if we had sold
them normally, the music business has become a little crazy. So if any of you were wondering whether or not eMusic was a good deal for the artists, too, that should answer your question. Category: general -- posted at: 9:49 AM Comments[3] |

Wed, 20 September 2006 I just got back yesterday from a long weekend road trip to Virginia Beach, and I have to be honest with you -- I really don't have the energy to do a show tonight. I didn't want to leave you empty-handed this week, though, so I thought you might enjoy an encore presentation of the Bitstream Dream special I did back in February, in part because Rom Di Prisco, the leader of the collective, was nice enough to grant me permission to use a song from Spiralglide, their latest CD, for another project I'm developing. If you've signed up for an eMusic account through Dave's Lounge, you can download Spiralglide from eMusic by clicking here. However, you can also purchase a higher-quality MP3 copy of that album directly from the band for only $4.99. Click here to find out how. Playlist for the Bitstream Dream special:

Wed, 13 September 2006 It's been kind of a crazy week. Can you blame me for turning to the Tao Te Ching again for this week's opening? Several tracks from this show are featured on the Aniligital Music compilation All Your Beats Volume 2, a follow-up to the cleverly titled All Your Beats Are Belong To Us. If you sign up for an eMusic account through Dave's Lounge, you can get this excellent compilation in DRM-free MP3 format, plus 12 additional MP3s from eMusic's huge catalog of independent artists, absolutely free. Wed, 30 August 2006 ![]() If you stop by daveslounge.com this week, you may notice that some of the iTunes links that were up on this site are no longer here. That's because Linkshare, the company that runs the iTunes Affiliate Program, has decided that they no longer wish to pay me the money that they owe me. It's not a huge amount of money, but the fact that this company has been giving me the run-around for weeks and at one point tried to lock me out of my account is clearly a sign that they no longer wish to have me as an affiliate. I have sold more than $1,000 worth of music through this affiliate program in the last year, and they have chosen not to deal with me fairly. For this reason, I've decided to remove the iTunes links from this site and instead point people toward a music store that treats independent artists and music customers fairly -- eMusic! If you click on that box on the top right-hand corner of the page and sign up for an eMusic account, you'll get 25 free downloads, all in MP3 format with no DRM attached, so they'll work fine with any iPod or MP3 player. More than 1 million tracks from indie artists and labels are available through eMusic, including tunes from Natalie Walker, Slovo, Bitstream Dream, and all the artists featured on this week's podcast, and subscriptions start at $9.99 a month for 40 tracks a month -- much better than the 99 cents per song that you have to pay at iTunes. In the interest of full disclosure, Dave's Lounge receives a commission for every person who signs up for an eMusic account through this web site. In other words, if you're looking for a way to support this podcast and get a great deal on new music, this is it. Of course, you'll still be able to buy CDs from the Dave's Lounge Shop, too, if you would rather have uncompressed music. Due to some limitations in LibSyn's software, I've been unable to remove all the iTunes links from this site. However, I would encourage all of you to avoid those links. If you wish to continue using iTunes to download this podcast, that's fine, but when it comes to buying independent music, you'll find a much better deal at eMusic. Playlist for Dave's Lounge #57:

Sun, 20 August 2006 I got an email from Natalie Walker last week which included a correction from Dave's Lounge #56: "Faith" was
actually written and produced by stuhr as well. It was originally going
to go on DD's sophomore project, but it became the spark that ignited
the fire between the Stuhr boys and I. The truth is that Travis, Steve
and I never produced anything for the second album (this is why I went
solo). Category: general -- posted at: 4:41 PM Comments[4] |
Wed, 16 August 2006 ![]() I've been waiting for a while to share this one with you, and I am so glad to have the opportunity at last... Natalie Walker, the former lead singer of Daughter Darling, has just released her solo debut, Urban Angel, and folks, it is fantastic. This week's show features several tracks from this CD, as well as a special iTunes-only remix by Thievery Corporation of one of Natalie's songs, "Quicksand." Update on CD Baby program: Everything appears to be working okay on their end, and I received an email from a listener in Australia who purchased a couple of CDs, both of which were credited to my affiliate account. Thu, 29 June 2006 Thanks for waiting. ;) I had a vision when I created Dave's Lounge. Consider this episode an opportunity to share and reaffirm that vision with all of you. Last September, I gave a presentation at the Duke Podcast Symposium here in Durham, NC. That's what you hear in the show this week. For new listeners, it should give you a better idea of where I'm coming from. For longtime listeners who already get it... thank you for staying subscribed. This wasn't quite how I envisioned #50, and my decision to incorporate the presentation into this episode came very late, which is part of the reason for the delay. I hope you find it worth the wait. Tue, 20 June 2006 Dave's Lounge #50 is going to be a little bit later than I had planned, in part because I spent a good chunk of tonight here. North Carolina doesn't win pro sports championships very often. In fact, up until last night, it had never won a pro sports championship. I would have felt bad not going to the party... On top of that, I've been planning a trip to Virginia Beach this weekend, so the #50 might not be done until next week. It's partially done, though, and still in the works, so don't go anywhere. Dave's Lounge is still open for you, and there's some great music in the next show. As those placards on the Tonight Show used to say, more to come... If you're still unable to reach this site via daveslounge.com, then the DNS info has not propagated to your area yet. Give it time. It should sort itself out soon. As far as I can tell, this does not affect people subscribed to the iTunes feed. Also, I am fully aware of the mess that is Permanent4.com right now, as I made that mess myself. I will attempt to fix this later today, but it will probably be the weekend before the whole thing is sorted out... Category: general -- posted at: 10:26 AM Comments[0] |
Wed, 14 June 2006 This week's show shines a spotlight on Groove Gravy Records, an independent downtempo label based in Los Angeles. Label owner Roy Shakked, who's also the producer behind The Tao of Groove, was nice enough to grant me permission to play some tunes from the label's Chill Pill compilation series. I picked out three artists from those compilations to feature on this show -- and let me tell you, it wasn't an easy choice. This was also the first podcast I recorded on my brand new laptop, and everything seemed to go well. Also, if you've emailed me in the last week -- especially about the web design -- and I haven't gotten back to you yet, sit tight. I do intend to respond to everyone soon. Tue, 7 March 2006 Okay, so the Dave's Lounge Shop is down again today. Several graphics on my page are 404 as well. I'm seeing posts on LibSyn's support forum from people asking why their podcasts aren't showing up on their feed. I'm also hearing very little from LibSyn beyond a cursory, "We're moving things around as best we can, so bear with us." It's better than nothing, but it still feels a little sketchy. Clearly, their latest hardware upgrade is breaking things left and right. For this reason, I'm going to push Dave's Lounge #39 back a week to give the LibSyn guys some time to get their house in order. I want to be sure the Shop is open for next week's show, because there are a couple of songs from this show that you will want to buy. In the meantime, I'd like to ask a small favor of you, my dear listeners. I've gone into iTunes and created some iMixes of songs that have appeared on Dave's Lounge. I'd really appreciate it if you would go into iTunes and rate those mixes. If you'd like to buy some of them, too, that would be great, but just rating them would be enough for now. I'm attempting to see if I can use these iMixes as a promotional tool for the podcast itself. Here are the iMixes:

I've played their tracks a few times before on this show, but after hearing their new album, Spiralglide, I knew I had to do a full show featuring their music. Bitstream Dream is currently selling Spiralglide in MP3 format (256 Kbps) on their web site for only $4.99. You can also buy their entire music output -- 4 full-length CDs in MP3 form -- for only $14.99. Not a bad deal, eh? Click here for more information. Playlist for Dave's Lounge #35

Wed, 25 January 2006 I was saddened to learn last week that Daughter Darling, the band that kicked off the very first episode of Dave's Lounge, has broken up. Lead vocalist Natalie Walker announced recently that she has decided to pursue a solo career, and she's set up this Myspace page in preparation for her solo debut. "Sweet Shadows" was a great CD, and if it's not in your collection yet, it should be. You can buy a copy at the Dave's Lounge Shop. I wish everyone in the band all the best in their future endeavors. Wed, 18 January 2006 The opening for today's show came directly from the Tao Te Ching, the classic Chinese manual on the art of living. I've been reading it a lot lately, as life has remained hectic for me after the holidays, and I thought this verse fit really well with this week's show... Playlist for Dave's Lounge #32

Wed, 11 January 2006 Dave's Lounge is currently being downloaded in 36 countries around the globe. Now it's time for you, my dear listeners, to put yourselves on the map. I've set up a Dave's Lounge Frappr Map, where listeners can push in a virtual pin wherever they currently live. Just click on the link in the right-hand menu and follow the instructions for putting yourself on the map. You can also leave a message for the rest of the Dave's Lounge audience to see. I'm hoping that all 36 countries listening to this show will be represented on this map... Playlist for Dave's Lounge #31

Wed, 14 December 2005 With the holidays approaching and things getting more hectic than usual this year -- which really shouldn't be the case -- I've decided to make this show my last show for 2005. Have no fear, though, because Dave's Lounge is always open, and I plan to hit the ground running the first week of 2006. That includes hanging out at Podcastercon in Chapel Hill, NC, on Saturday, January 7. So if you're coming to town that weekend, drop me a line. We'll hang out and talk about podsafe music and other fun stuff. In the meantime, take a minute to befriend me on Myspace, because all the kids are doing it these days. Heh. May all of you have a very happy holiday season, and may the best thing that happened to you in 2005 be the worst thing that happens to you in 2006. See y'all again soon! Wed, 7 December 2005 You really ought to pick up a copy of Atomica's CD, Metropolitan. It's a really good CD. You can buy that disc and discs from other artists featured on this show at the Dave's Lounge Shop. iTunes downloads are also available from there as well. Playlist for Dave's Lounge #28

Wed, 30 November 2005 I had the ACC-Big Ten Challenge on in the background as I recorded this. You'd be surprised how hard it is to chill out while watching college basketball. Then again, maybe you wouldn't... Playlist for Dave's Lounge #27
