Wed, 23 November 2005 A couple of things to note about this show, the first of what I hope will be many 6-song shows: I've added a new feature called Artist Rewind. Basic idea is that you'll get to hear another song from a band previously featured on this podcast. It's a way for me to continue to promote certain bands without repeating the same songs multiple times. Anyone doing a daily podcast -- like, say, Adam Curry -- can get away with that, but I like introducing people to new tunes, especially for those who listen to Dave's Lounge multiple times. Also, the second half of this show features a few bands playing live trip hop that some may label "Shoegazer" or "Atmospheric Pop" or even "Live Jazz." It's a bit of an experiment for me, really, and I'm curious as to what people think of it. If you like or hate it, shoot me an email and let me know. Thanks. Playlist for Dave's Lounge #26

Wed, 16 November 2005 You wanted more music per podcast, and this week, you got it! Dave's Lounge #25 is a full hour of great downtempo tunes from great artists who have been featured on the last 24 shows. I'm also pleased to announce that future editions of Dave's Lounge will include more music every week and will be encoded at 128 Kbps instead of 112 for better sound quality. This is a big thank you to all my listeners who have supported this podcast over the last six months, and I certainly hope y'all stop by again for the next 25. Your support and feedback makes this show worth doing every week. Oh, and if you ever wondered about the background music I play on this show every week, check out the first song and the announcement that follows it... Playlist for Dave's Lounge #25

Mon, 14 November 2005 I'm interested in finding out more information about you, my dear listeners. So I'd really appreciate it if you would take a few minutes to fill out the Dave's Lounge Listener Survey. Click on the box marked "Take 5" on the right-hand column of this web page, or just click here. This will help me taylor the show a bit more to your needs. Thanks! Wed, 9 November 2005 Just a silly little thing to tide you over between now and the big Dave's Lounge #25 extravaganza next week. How well do you know your podsafe downtempo electronica? Take the Dave's Lounge Test and find out. Visit the Dave's Lounge Shop to get the answers, and to support the artists whose music makes this such a great show to produce every week. In case your wondering, I actually recorded this days before I heard the news that Adam Curry was going 100% podsafe on the Daily Source Code. I wonder if this might replace Jan Polet's Hit Test for him this week... Oh, by the way, I won't be at the Portable Media Expo this weekend. If you're going, have a great time. Enjoy the show! Wed, 2 November 2005 Sorry to keep everyone waiting for this show. Things always get busy for me around the end of the year. Things will be even busier next weekend, so I won't have time to put together the big Dave's Lounge #25, but I'll have a little something to tide you over between now and then. In the meantime, check out this nice review of Dave's Lounge at Podcast Launchpad. Thanks, Colin! Playlist for Dave's Lounge #24

Wed, 19 October 2005 This week, we're putting the spotlight on Endless Blue, a band formed in Minneapolis, MN, but now living in Milwaukee, WI. I've played tracks from their first CD twice before, but this show will feature several tracks from their new CD, "Smoke Through It," which is available from the Dave's Lounge Shop. If you like what you hear, go and buy a disc. Each one is only $9.99 plus shipping, and every purchase will support both the band and Dave's Lounge. Wed, 12 October 2005 In case you were wondering, last week's connectivity problem was a result of a spat between two backbone providers. You can read about it here. Kind of sad that so much of the Internet can be disrupted by two feuding companies... Regardless, here's hoping you're all back online and able to get Dave's Lounge. If you're having trouble... well, if you're having trouble, you may not be able to see this web page right now, but I do want to hear about it. Email me at daveslounge@gmail.com. Wed, 5 October 2005 So, if you're interested in seeing the presentation I gave about music podcasts last week at the Duke Podcasting Symposium, click here, then select "Triangle Podcasters Forum." My talk doesn't begin until a little more than halfway through, right after Anne Bramley's talk about what she's doing with Eat Feed. You'll need Quicktime and a live Internet connection. I may make the audio version available on this feed later. If you're interested in that, let me know. UPDATE: I forgot to update the Dave's Lounge Shop with links show #21. I am unable to do so from home for some reason; Liberated Syndication has inexplicably blocked my PC from accessing their servers. So I'm doing this from another PC that is not blocked. Everything should be working now, but if you're having any trouble, email me and let me know. Playlist for Dave's Lounge #21

Wed, 28 September 2005 So here's the deal. A few weeks ago, I was invited to give a presentation at the Duke University Podcasting Symposium, which was held on Sept. 27-28. For the last week, I've been writing, rehearsing, rewriting and re-rehearsing this big idea speech (and associated Powerpoint presentation) about music and podcasting. I got so involved in putting this thing together that I found myself with no time left to actually put together this week's show. Instead of leaving you empty-handed this week, though, I've decided to take you back to the beginning of Dave's Lounge. Most of you have probably heard this show, but for those that haven't, you can see for yourself just how little has really changed in 20 podcasts. My speech will be available as a podcast and an online video sometime in the next few days. Click here to look for it. Oh, by the way, most of the music in Show #1 is available from the Dave's Lounge Shop right now. I've said it before, and I'll say it again -- these are great artists making great music, and they deserve your support. Playlist for Dave's Lounge #1:

Wed, 21 September 2005 This week, we're taking a trip down memory lane, featuring some artists that were big on MP3.com back in the day, as well as some remixes done by musicians within the online electronic scene -- including one remix by little ol' me! Bet you didn't think I had it in me, huh? Happy Birthday, Pat! Playlist for Dave's Lounge #20

Wed, 14 September 2005 This week's edition of Dave's Lounge clocks in at a little over 25 minutes. Granted, it's not quite the longer version of Dave's Lounge that many of you are craving, but I hope it will do for now... Get well soon, Derek! Playlist for Dave's Lounge #19

Wed, 7 September 2005 ![]() This week's podcast is dedicated to the victims of Hurricane Katrina, but it's also an attempt to make a difference in their lives. The artists featured in this week's podcast are donating all proceeds from their CD sales to the American Red Cross. You can purchase these CDs through the links below, or through the Dave's Lounge Shop. In addition, for the month of September, Dave's Lounge will donate $1 for every CD sold to the Red Cross. Wed, 31 August 2005 ![]() The devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina along the Gulf Coast of the United States has torn apart countless families and left hundreds of thousands of people with no homes, no livelihoods, and little hope for the future. The American Red Cross is now undertaking the largest disaster recovery operation in its history, and now more than ever, this organization needs your support. Please donate money to the Red Cross at www.redcross.org. If you are unable to donate money, please consider donating blood. Contact your local Red Cross chapter for information on upcoming blood drives. Please help the victims of Hurricane Katrina, because in times of crisis, all we really have is each other. Thank you. |
Wed, 24 August 2005 There appears to be something amiss with my RSS feed at the moment, which is why you probably haven't received Dave's Lounge #16 yet -- a rather unfortunate bit of timing, given the big announcement in this week's show. I have contacted Liberated Syndication about this matter. Hopefully, this will be resolved shortly...
UPDATE (10:40 PM): Okay, the feed should be working properly now. I think we figured out what the problem was, so I'll be sure not to duplicate the conditions that caused that problem any time soon. Category: general -- posted at: 8:10 PM Comments[3] |

Wed, 17 August 2005 A couple of things about this week's show: First, I was planning on launching the Dave's Lounge CD Store this week, but I'm still waiting for Liberated Syndication to get back to me regarding a support issue. Hopefully, this will be resolved in time for next week's show. Second, in show #2, I played a track by Bitstream Dream called "Whirlwind." It was actually a collaboration between Bitstream Dream and Beauty's Confusion, who is featured in this week's show. "Whirlwind" actually ended up on Beauty's Confusion's CD, Breathe In. You can purchase that track from iTunes by clicking here. Playlist for Dave's Lounge #15

Wed, 10 August 2005 This may be the single geekiest thing I have ever done... Two weeks ago, I purchased a Palm Treo 650 All of this show's tracks were created with Bhajis Loops, a portable music sequencer for Palm OS. You might not know that from listening to some of them, especially the stuff by Transient, who has released six Palm Cuts collections on archive.org. There's some really good music within Palm Cuts. Tue, 26 July 2005 It's official! Dave's Lounge has been accepted into the iTunes Affiliate Program. Wed, 13 July 2005 ![]() Welcome to a special edition of Dave's Lounge. A special welcome to new listeners who heard my interview on Podcast411. I know you're gonna dig this... Artemis' new CD, Gravity, came out a few months ago, and there was no way I could pick just one song from that CD to play. So I had to give this woman her own show. I think she's that good, and I think you'll agree with me after listening. I encourage all of you subscribers out there to buy Artemis' two CDs. You can find them both at Amazon for only $9.99 each. Sat, 9 July 2005 I'm having a few issues with redesigning the template at the moment. This may take a few days to work out, so please be patient with me.
UPDATE (11:10 AM): As you can see, I've cleaned things up a bit this morning. The design isn't quite how I would like it, but it's readable, which is good enough for me for now. I'll be beating on the Libsyn templates again in the near future, though... Category: general -- posted at: 2:00 AM Comments[4] |
Wed, 6 July 2005 Okay, so this isn't the special episode. I've decided to save that until I hit double digits. I've also decided to start releasing shows in the middle of the week rather than on weekends -- mostly because I'd like to keep my weekends free in the future, for various reasons. This show features a track from Bent's excellent album "Ariels," which features vocal performances from Rachel Foster of Weekend Players and Sian Evans of Kosheen. This CD was never released in the U.S., but it is now available on iTunes. Click here to check it out. Playlist for Dave's Lounge #9:

Sat, 25 June 2005 ![]() Welcome to my first podcast as a member of the Association of Music Podcasting. I spend a little time in this show talking about why I joined and what I hope to accomplish by being a part of AMP. I hope my rambling doesn't bug you too much. Sat, 4 June 2005 It's the beginning of the month, and if you know anything about podcasting, you know what that means. Dozens of podcasters are out there begging for votes on Podcast Alley, everyone's favorite podcast directory. I'd love to jump into the top 50 on Podcast Alley as much as the next podcaster, but I refuse to get on the mic and ask people to vote for me. The whole system reminds me too much of MP3.com's infamous Million-Dollar Download program, where they divided a million bucks a month among all the artists, and everyone begged for downloads -- not because their music was any good, but because they wanted to get paid. People did a lot of shady things to get downloads back then. Of course, I wouldn't ask you not to vote for me, either, because being in the Top 50 on Podcast Alley is good publicity. In fact, if you enjoy the show, I would also encourage you to rate me at Podcast Pickle, another fine podcast directory. A fledgling podcast like this needs all the help it can get. Thanks. Wed, 18 May 2005 Just a quick note to all 52 of my loyal subscribers, who may have their own deck of playing cards soon... I've got a busy weekend ahead of me, and I'm afraid I won't have the time to sit down and crank out Dave's Lounge #4 this week. Stay subscribed, though, and I'll have a new show ready for you soon. In the meantime, if you haven't already done so, please vote for Dave's Lounge at Podcast Alley. (I'm really trying to avoid begging for votes on the show itself, because too many other podcasters do it, and it gets old really quickly, but a few extra votes would do a lot to help this show find more than 52 subscribers. Talk about narrowcasting, eh?) Thanks for listening. As those placards on The Tonight Show used to say, "More to come..." Category: general -- posted at: 3:22 PM Comments[6] |
Sat, 14 May 2005 Some things to know about this week's show: I signed up for Amazon Associates earlier this week. That means that if an artist featured on this show has a CD on Amazon, I will put a link to that CD in the show notes, and if you click on that link and buy the CD, you will not only support a great artist or band, but you will also help me pay for the web hosting for this show. (It's Liberated Syndication, so it won't take that many CDs, I promise...) I'm considering doing the same thing for iTunes, but I'm not so sure I want to promote DRM-wrapped music, even if it does support the artists. What do you guys think?

This week's featured artist is Bird York, one of the few singer-actresses I've heard who can really sing. Her song "In the Deep" is the featured song in the new movie Crash, starring Don Cheadle and Sandra Bullock. It's also on her excellent CD, The Velvet Hour.
