Wed, 14 February 2007 All the music in this week's playlist comes from the Magnatune compilation Downtempo Chill by DJ Cary. The artists are all part of the Magnatune label, which promotes independent artists with a shareware-style "try before you buy" model. You can listen to entire albums on their web site and choose how much you want to pay for each album. It's a fairly unique model, and that's kind of a shame, really. Click here for the full compilation. In the interest of full disclosure, Magnatune is not paying me for any sales. They did, however, give me full access to their music catalog, which is podsafe, though you'll need to contact Magnatune to download MP3s for podcast play. Click here for more info. Wed, 7 February 2007 I've decided that it's time to make some major changes to the Dave's Lounge web site. These changes will take place some time in the next two weeks. I will attempt to do this without disrupting the current RSS feed, but I can't make any guarantees on this. Keep an eye (and an ear) out for details... This week's opening monologue was somewhat inspired by this post by Danah Boyd. I met Danah a year and a half ago at a podcasting seminar at Duke University. She writes some very interesting stuff about social media and its impact on our culture. Worth seeking out if you have the time. Playlist for Dave's Lounge #71:

Thu, 1 February 2007 The snow began falling this morning in Durham, North Carolina, which usually shuts much of the city and surrounding area down. It degraded into rain by the afternoon, but that still gave me enough time to put together a quick show to make up for Tuesday's DSL outage. Hope you enjoy it. Playlist for Dave's Lounge #70:

Wed, 24 January 2007 ![]() This week's episode features the music of Miami-based downtempo artist Raul Ramirez, a former drummer in numerous rock bands who began a solo project and has produced two excellent downtempo CDs. Wed, 10 January 2007 Dave's Lounge has returned for 2007 -- no thanks to Verizon DSL, who seem to have throttled the upload speed from my house down to about 40 Kbps. Once again, I'm uploading this show using the Panera Bread Wi-Fi spot down the street. I hope everyone out there enjoyed the holidays. The holiday here lasted a little longer than expected, but only because I had so many emails and music submissions to sort through -- and I'm still going through them, so if you're waiting for a reply from me, sit tight. Lots of great music is ahead this year. Thanks to everyone who sent feedback on the iTunes links. Based on your feedback, I have decided to bring back iTunes links and including them with eMusic, Amazon, CD Baby and other links as appropriate. Nobody likes DRM, but everybody likes choices, so I will try to give you more choices to help support artists in the future. I've also taken the Dave's Lounge Shop down for the time being, but I plan to bring it back soon, hopefully in a much better form than it was. Oh, and if you dig Dave's Lounge, please Digg Dave's Lounge. I'll include the link to the Digg podcast page for Dave's Lounge at the bottom of the show notes and in the sidebar. If you have a Digg account, you should check out their new podcast section. It's pretty slick. Playlist for Dave's Lounge #67:

Thu, 21 December 2006 So I've decided to take the rest of the year off, but before I go, I wanted to let y'all hear a little piece I recorded for AMPed, the Association of Music Podcasting's weekly show. They're doing a 2006 retrospective that's coming out on New Year's Day, and they asked us to submit one of our favorite tunes from 2006. I don't think any of you will be surprised with my selection... Natalie Walker, "Urban Angel" Enjoy the end of the year, everyone. I'll talk to y'all again in 2007. Dig Dave's Lounge? Wed, 13 December 2006 Back from a long hiatus with a nice long show for you this week... I got something in the mail a few weeks ago that I didn't expect -- a commission check from Linkshare, the company running the iTunes Affiliate Program. As you may recall, I dropped the iTunes links and started promoting eMusic because Linkshare appeared to stop sending checks and gave me the runaround when I asked them about. Of course, now that I've actually gotten a check, I'm starting to wonder if I judged them a little harshly. I talk about that in this week's show, and I'd like to hear your thoughts on this. Send me an email at daveslounge@gmail.com and let me know what you think... Playlist for Dave's Lounge #66:

Wed, 15 November 2006 I didn't include the following rant in the show this week, because... well, because Dave's Lounge isn't really a ranting kind of show. Nevertheless, I felt this was something that needed to be said... You may have heard about Zune, Microsoft's new portable media player that will attempt to knock the iPod off its perch. What you might not have heard was that Microsoft struck a deal with Universal Music Group, one of the Big Four major labels, that will pay UMG approximately one dollar for every Zune sold. This was a result of UMG's refusal to license its catalog to Microsoft without a deal like this in place, because as UMG Chairman and CEO Doug Morris put it, "These devices are just repositories for stolen music, and they all know it. So it's time to get paid for it." Some reports indicate that similar deals with the other three major labels are forthcoming, though that hasn't been confirmed. Honestly, I fail to see how anyone at Microsoft could think that this is a good precedent. All this deal does is legitimize the RIAA's stance that all online music is "stolen" music, which is about as far from the truth as you could imagine. Plus, this deal basically gives money to an organization that now makes a good portion of its money by extorting file sharers through lawsuits and intimidation. Paying for a Zune now means funding more RIAA attacks on consumer rights through any legal means they see fit. And how much of that money will end up in the artists' hands? UMG says half, but the way most record deals are set up, that half will end up going toward recouping the advance, which means the bands themselves will never see a dime. And what about the indie artists, who get shafted by default because of this deal? Think about this: if you give a song to a friend through the Zune's wireless connection, the Zune software automatically puts a DRM wrapper on that song that prevents your friend from listening to it more than 3 times -- even if the song is legitimately available for free on the Internet. If the song is available under a Creative Commons license, as Dave's Lounge is, the Zune might violate that license with this DRM. I won't even begin to discuss Microsoft's stubborn refusal to include any sort of podcast support in any of its software... Folks, if you were thinking about buying a Zune, please don't. We need to send a message to Microsoft that we refuse to give money to any business that shows no respect to its customers, even if it's just the tiniest fraction of each sale. The only way to stop the RIAA is to stop giving them money. Anything else is just lip service. If you'd like an alternative, consider this. For the price of a new
Zune, you can get a very capable 20GB Archos media player Of course, if you already have an MP3 player, more power to you. Just remember that the Zune is not an upgrade. We should be moving forward,
not backward. You can read more about this horrible Zune-Universal deal here. Okay, rant over. On to the music, none of which is stolen, despite what Doug Morris would have you think... Playlist for Dave's Lounge #65:

Wed, 8 November 2006 ![]() You cannot imagine how stoked I am to bring you this week's show. Last week, I secured permission from Nettwerk Records to play one song each from two of their artists -- Ivy and Delerium. You may recall that Nettwerk broke away from the RIAA last January and decided to fund the defense of a music fan sued for sharing files over the Internet. At the time, Nettwerk CEO Terry McBride declared, "Suing music fans is not the solution, it's the problem." The label then decided to sell MP3s through its online store, Werkshop, and submitted a large portion of its catalog to eMusic. Nettwerk didn't have to work with me when I contacted them, but this is a forward-thinking label, and I'm thrilled to play their artists on this show. I sincerely hope this won't be the last time a Nettwerk artist gets played on a podcast. Be sure to support their Save the Music Fan campaign, because music lovers shouldn't be penalized for sharing culture. Ivy and Delerium aren't the only recognizable names on this week's show. Moloko and Morcheeba both popped up recently on the Podsafe Music Network. Is your music up there yet? Playlist for Dave's Lounge #64:

Wed, 1 November 2006 A few weeks ago, one of my listeners sent me a long list of downtempo tunes he found on eMusic. Some of them were so good that I had to play them on this show. (Thanks, Kevin!) It got me to thinking, though, that he couldn't be the only one to have found such great tunes on eMusic. So I'd like to put this question out to everyone listening -- what great downtempo and trip hop tunes have you found on eMusic? Email me at daveslounge@gmail.com with some tunes you've found, and if I like them, I'll play them on the show. If you're not an eMusic subscriber yet, click here to sign up for a free trial eMusic account through Dave's Lounge and get 25 free MP3s. Wed, 25 October 2006 Well, my internet connection at home isn't letting me upload files anywhere -- strangely enough, downloading files isn't affected -- so I had to upload this episode at a Panera Bread Wi-Fi hotspot this morning. I'm going to have a nice long talk with folks at Verizon later tonight... A quick follow-up on Elevator, a band I played on last week's show. As I had expected, the group is no longer together, but its lead singer, New Zealand native Julia Grace, has embarked on a solo career. You can hear more of Julia's music on her Myspace page. As it turns out, Elevator was described by one writer as "a worship band." I had suspected they might have been a Christian group, judging from the lyrics, but I didn't really know for certain, and really, the song itself was too good a fit for this show regardless. (Thanks for the info, Mario!) This week's first artist, MoShang, was recently interviewed on The Chillcast with Anji Bee. Click here to check out that interview. Playlist for Dave's Lounge #62:

Wed, 18 October 2006 It took a while to get this one together, and for a while, I wasn't sure it was going to get done tonight. One thing after another came up that kept me from recording, but I somehow managed to get through it all and get this one done. I even made this show a little longer for y'all, since you've been so patient. You'll recognize a lot of names in this lineup, but that's just because they all make great music. Wed, 20 September 2006 I just got back yesterday from a long weekend road trip to Virginia Beach, and I have to be honest with you -- I really don't have the energy to do a show tonight. I didn't want to leave you empty-handed this week, though, so I thought you might enjoy an encore presentation of the Bitstream Dream special I did back in February, in part because Rom Di Prisco, the leader of the collective, was nice enough to grant me permission to use a song from Spiralglide, their latest CD, for another project I'm developing. If you've signed up for an eMusic account through Dave's Lounge, you can download Spiralglide from eMusic by clicking here. However, you can also purchase a higher-quality MP3 copy of that album directly from the band for only $4.99. Click here to find out how. Playlist for the Bitstream Dream special:

Wed, 30 August 2006 ![]() If you stop by daveslounge.com this week, you may notice that some of the iTunes links that were up on this site are no longer here. That's because Linkshare, the company that runs the iTunes Affiliate Program, has decided that they no longer wish to pay me the money that they owe me. It's not a huge amount of money, but the fact that this company has been giving me the run-around for weeks and at one point tried to lock me out of my account is clearly a sign that they no longer wish to have me as an affiliate. I have sold more than $1,000 worth of music through this affiliate program in the last year, and they have chosen not to deal with me fairly. For this reason, I've decided to remove the iTunes links from this site and instead point people toward a music store that treats independent artists and music customers fairly -- eMusic! If you click on that box on the top right-hand corner of the page and sign up for an eMusic account, you'll get 25 free downloads, all in MP3 format with no DRM attached, so they'll work fine with any iPod or MP3 player. More than 1 million tracks from indie artists and labels are available through eMusic, including tunes from Natalie Walker, Slovo, Bitstream Dream, and all the artists featured on this week's podcast, and subscriptions start at $9.99 a month for 40 tracks a month -- much better than the 99 cents per song that you have to pay at iTunes. In the interest of full disclosure, Dave's Lounge receives a commission for every person who signs up for an eMusic account through this web site. In other words, if you're looking for a way to support this podcast and get a great deal on new music, this is it. Of course, you'll still be able to buy CDs from the Dave's Lounge Shop, too, if you would rather have uncompressed music. Due to some limitations in LibSyn's software, I've been unable to remove all the iTunes links from this site. However, I would encourage all of you to avoid those links. If you wish to continue using iTunes to download this podcast, that's fine, but when it comes to buying independent music, you'll find a much better deal at eMusic. Playlist for Dave's Lounge #57:

This week's show features several tracks from this CD, as well as a special iTunes-only remix by Thievery Corporation of one of Natalie's songs, "Quicksand." Update on CD Baby program: Everything appears to be working okay on their end, and I received an email from a listener in Australia who purchased a couple of CDs, both of which were credited to my affiliate account. Wed, 19 July 2006 If the numbers I'm getting from CD Baby are correct, I've only sold 2 CDs through the Dave's Lounge Shop in the last month and a half. Thu, 29 June 2006 Thanks for waiting. ;) I had a vision when I created Dave's Lounge. Consider this episode an opportunity to share and reaffirm that vision with all of you. Last September, I gave a presentation at the Duke Podcast Symposium here in Durham, NC. That's what you hear in the show this week. For new listeners, it should give you a better idea of where I'm coming from. For longtime listeners who already get it... thank you for staying subscribed. This wasn't quite how I envisioned #50, and my decision to incorporate the presentation into this episode came very late, which is part of the reason for the delay. I hope you find it worth the wait. Wed, 14 June 2006 This week's show shines a spotlight on Groove Gravy Records, an independent downtempo label based in Los Angeles. Label owner Roy Shakked, who's also the producer behind The Tao of Groove, was nice enough to grant me permission to play some tunes from the label's Chill Pill compilation series. I picked out three artists from those compilations to feature on this show -- and let me tell you, it wasn't an easy choice. This was also the first podcast I recorded on my brand new laptop, and everything seemed to go well. Wed, 12 April 2006 I apologize for the rerun this week, folks. Life's been getting in the way of podcasting the past few weeks, and I've gotten much further behind than usual in both my quest for new music and my correspondence. I didn't want to put out a half-done podcast this week, but I didn't want to leave you all hanging, either, so I'm hoping this "encore presentation" will suffice. This is the Endless Blue spotlight episode, re-edited to remove all that vague sexual tension between me and my robotic announcer. If you're new to the Lounge and haven't gone back to download past shows, you might have missed this one. If you have this one already, you may prefer to keep this copy in your collection instead. This show featured several tracks from their CD, "Smoke Through It," which is available from the Dave's Lounge Shop. Wed, 29 March 2006 It was more than 3 years ago that Tim O'Reilly wrote this column, in which he famously proclaimed, "Obscurity is a far greater threat to authors and creative artists than piracy." With that in mind, I thought I would shine a spotlight on an artist whose music, in my humble opinion, shouldn't be nearly as obscure as it is. Also, you'll hear from a prolific group that I've featured before that just released a new full-length CD. They're back with a new touring band and a new CD that you don't want to miss. Speaking of things you don't want to miss, be sure to check out The Chillcast with Anji Bee, another new downtempo podcast that covers a wide range of chill tunes. Wed, 8 February 2006 This week's show features some great tunes from the electronic music collective Bitstream Dream. I've played their tracks a few times before on this show, but after hearing their new album, Spiralglide, I knew I had to do a full show featuring their music. Bitstream Dream is currently selling Spiralglide in MP3 format (256 Kbps) on their web site for only $4.99. You can also buy their entire music output -- 4 full-length CDs in MP3 form -- for only $14.99. Not a bad deal, eh? Click here for more information. Playlist for Dave's Lounge #35

Wed, 25 January 2006 I was saddened to learn last week that Daughter Darling, the band that kicked off the very first episode of Dave's Lounge, has broken up. Lead vocalist Natalie Walker announced recently that she has decided to pursue a solo career, and she's set up this Myspace page in preparation for her solo debut. "Sweet Shadows" was a great CD, and if it's not in your collection yet, it should be. You can buy a copy at the Dave's Lounge Shop. I wish everyone in the band all the best in their future endeavors. Wed, 18 January 2006 The opening for today's show came directly from the Tao Te Ching, the classic Chinese manual on the art of living. I've been reading it a lot lately, as life has remained hectic for me after the holidays, and I thought this verse fit really well with this week's show... Playlist for Dave's Lounge #32

Wed, 11 January 2006 Dave's Lounge is currently being downloaded in 36 countries around the globe. Now it's time for you, my dear listeners, to put yourselves on the map. I've set up a Dave's Lounge Frappr Map, where listeners can push in a virtual pin wherever they currently live. Just click on the link in the right-hand menu and follow the instructions for putting yourself on the map. You can also leave a message for the rest of the Dave's Lounge audience to see. I'm hoping that all 36 countries listening to this show will be represented on this map... Playlist for Dave's Lounge #31

Wed, 14 December 2005 With the holidays approaching and things getting more hectic than usual this year -- which really shouldn't be the case -- I've decided to make this show my last show for 2005. Have no fear, though, because Dave's Lounge is always open, and I plan to hit the ground running the first week of 2006. That includes hanging out at Podcastercon in Chapel Hill, NC, on Saturday, January 7. So if you're coming to town that weekend, drop me a line. We'll hang out and talk about podsafe music and other fun stuff. In the meantime, take a minute to befriend me on Myspace, because all the kids are doing it these days. Heh. May all of you have a very happy holiday season, and may the best thing that happened to you in 2005 be the worst thing that happens to you in 2006. See y'all again soon! Wed, 7 December 2005 You really ought to pick up a copy of Atomica's CD, Metropolitan. It's a really good CD. You can buy that disc and discs from other artists featured on this show at the Dave's Lounge Shop. iTunes downloads are also available from there as well. Playlist for Dave's Lounge #28

Wed, 23 November 2005 A couple of things to note about this show, the first of what I hope will be many 6-song shows: I've added a new feature called Artist Rewind. Basic idea is that you'll get to hear another song from a band previously featured on this podcast. It's a way for me to continue to promote certain bands without repeating the same songs multiple times. Anyone doing a daily podcast -- like, say, Adam Curry -- can get away with that, but I like introducing people to new tunes, especially for those who listen to Dave's Lounge multiple times. Also, the second half of this show features a few bands playing live trip hop that some may label "Shoegazer" or "Atmospheric Pop" or even "Live Jazz." It's a bit of an experiment for me, really, and I'm curious as to what people think of it. If you like or hate it, shoot me an email and let me know. Thanks. Playlist for Dave's Lounge #26

Wed, 16 November 2005 You wanted more music per podcast, and this week, you got it! Dave's Lounge #25 is a full hour of great downtempo tunes from great artists who have been featured on the last 24 shows. I'm also pleased to announce that future editions of Dave's Lounge will include more music every week and will be encoded at 128 Kbps instead of 112 for better sound quality. This is a big thank you to all my listeners who have supported this podcast over the last six months, and I certainly hope y'all stop by again for the next 25. Your support and feedback makes this show worth doing every week. Oh, and if you ever wondered about the background music I play on this show every week, check out the first song and the announcement that follows it... Playlist for Dave's Lounge #25

Wed, 9 November 2005 Just a silly little thing to tide you over between now and the big Dave's Lounge #25 extravaganza next week. How well do you know your podsafe downtempo electronica? Take the Dave's Lounge Test and find out. Visit the Dave's Lounge Shop to get the answers, and to support the artists whose music makes this such a great show to produce every week. In case your wondering, I actually recorded this days before I heard the news that Adam Curry was going 100% podsafe on the Daily Source Code. I wonder if this might replace Jan Polet's Hit Test for him this week... Oh, by the way, I won't be at the Portable Media Expo this weekend. If you're going, have a great time. Enjoy the show! Wed, 2 November 2005 Sorry to keep everyone waiting for this show. Things always get busy for me around the end of the year. Things will be even busier next weekend, so I won't have time to put together the big Dave's Lounge #25, but I'll have a little something to tide you over between now and then. In the meantime, check out this nice review of Dave's Lounge at Podcast Launchpad. Thanks, Colin! Playlist for Dave's Lounge #24

Wed, 19 October 2005 This week, we're putting the spotlight on Endless Blue, a band formed in Minneapolis, MN, but now living in Milwaukee, WI. I've played tracks from their first CD twice before, but this show will feature several tracks from their new CD, "Smoke Through It," which is available from the Dave's Lounge Shop. If you like what you hear, go and buy a disc. Each one is only $9.99 plus shipping, and every purchase will support both the band and Dave's Lounge. Wed, 12 October 2005 In case you were wondering, last week's connectivity problem was a result of a spat between two backbone providers. You can read about it here. Kind of sad that so much of the Internet can be disrupted by two feuding companies... Regardless, here's hoping you're all back online and able to get Dave's Lounge. If you're having trouble... well, if you're having trouble, you may not be able to see this web page right now, but I do want to hear about it. Email me at daveslounge@gmail.com. Wed, 5 October 2005 So, if you're interested in seeing the presentation I gave about music podcasts last week at the Duke Podcasting Symposium, click here, then select "Triangle Podcasters Forum." My talk doesn't begin until a little more than halfway through, right after Anne Bramley's talk about what she's doing with Eat Feed. You'll need Quicktime and a live Internet connection. I may make the audio version available on this feed later. If you're interested in that, let me know. UPDATE: I forgot to update the Dave's Lounge Shop with links show #21. I am unable to do so from home for some reason; Liberated Syndication has inexplicably blocked my PC from accessing their servers. So I'm doing this from another PC that is not blocked. Everything should be working now, but if you're having any trouble, email me and let me know. Playlist for Dave's Lounge #21

Wed, 28 September 2005 So here's the deal. A few weeks ago, I was invited to give a presentation at the Duke University Podcasting Symposium, which was held on Sept. 27-28. For the last week, I've been writing, rehearsing, rewriting and re-rehearsing this big idea speech (and associated Powerpoint presentation) about music and podcasting. I got so involved in putting this thing together that I found myself with no time left to actually put together this week's show. Instead of leaving you empty-handed this week, though, I've decided to take you back to the beginning of Dave's Lounge. Most of you have probably heard this show, but for those that haven't, you can see for yourself just how little has really changed in 20 podcasts. My speech will be available as a podcast and an online video sometime in the next few days. Click here to look for it. Oh, by the way, most of the music in Show #1 is available from the Dave's Lounge Shop right now. I've said it before, and I'll say it again -- these are great artists making great music, and they deserve your support. Playlist for Dave's Lounge #1:

Wed, 21 September 2005 This week, we're taking a trip down memory lane, featuring some artists that were big on MP3.com back in the day, as well as some remixes done by musicians within the online electronic scene -- including one remix by little ol' me! Bet you didn't think I had it in me, huh? Happy Birthday, Pat! Playlist for Dave's Lounge #20

Wed, 31 August 2005 ![]() The devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina along the Gulf Coast of the United States has torn apart countless families and left hundreds of thousands of people with no homes, no livelihoods, and little hope for the future. Please donate money to the Red Cross at www.redcross.org. If you are unable to donate money, please consider donating blood. Wed, 17 August 2005 A couple of things about this week's show: First, I was planning on launching the Dave's Lounge CD Store this week, but I'm still waiting for Liberated Syndication to get back to me regarding a support issue. Hopefully, this will be resolved in time for next week's show. Second, in show #2, I played a track by Bitstream Dream called "Whirlwind." It was actually a collaboration between Bitstream Dream and Beauty's Confusion, who is featured in this week's show. "Whirlwind" actually ended up on Beauty's Confusion's CD, Breathe In. You can purchase that track from iTunes by clicking here. Playlist for Dave's Lounge #15

Wed, 10 August 2005 This may be the single geekiest thing I have ever done... Two weeks ago, I purchased a Palm Treo 650 All of this show's tracks were created with Bhajis Loops, a portable music sequencer for Palm OS. You might not know that from listening to some of them, especially the stuff by Transient, who has released six Palm Cuts collections on archive.org. There's some really good music within Palm Cuts. Wed, 13 July 2005 ![]() Welcome to a special edition of Dave's Lounge. A special welcome to new listeners who heard my interview on Podcast411. I know you're gonna dig this... Artemis' new CD, Gravity, came out a few months ago, and there was no way I could pick just one song from that CD to play. So I had to give this woman her own show. I think she's that good, and I think you'll agree with me after listening. I encourage all of you subscribers out there to buy Artemis' two CDs. You can find them both at Amazon for only $9.99 each. Wed, 6 July 2005 Okay, so this isn't the special episode. I've decided to save that until I hit double digits. I've also decided to start releasing shows in the middle of the week rather than on weekends -- mostly because I'd like to keep my weekends free in the future, for various reasons. This show features a track from Bent's excellent album "Ariels," which features vocal performances from Rachel Foster of Weekend Players and Sian Evans of Kosheen. This CD was never released in the U.S., but it is now available on iTunes. Click here to check it out. Playlist for Dave's Lounge #9:

Sat, 25 June 2005 ![]() Welcome to my first podcast as a member of the Association of Music Podcasting. I spend a little time in this show talking about why I joined and what I hope to accomplish by being a part of AMP. I hope my rambling doesn't bug you too much. Sat, 4 June 2005 It's the beginning of the month, and if you know anything about podcasting, you know what that means. Dozens of podcasters are out there begging for votes on Podcast Alley, everyone's favorite podcast directory. I'd love to jump into the top 50 on Podcast Alley as much as the next podcaster, but I refuse to get on the mic and ask people to vote for me. The whole system reminds me too much of MP3.com's infamous Million-Dollar Download program, where they divided a million bucks a month among all the artists, and everyone begged for downloads -- not because their music was any good, but because they wanted to get paid. People did a lot of shady things to get downloads back then. Of course, I wouldn't ask you not to vote for me, either, because being in the Top 50 on Podcast Alley is good publicity. In fact, if you enjoy the show, I would also encourage you to rate me at Podcast Pickle, another fine podcast directory. A fledgling podcast like this needs all the help it can get. Thanks. Sat, 14 May 2005 Some things to know about this week's show: I signed up for Amazon Associates earlier this week. That means that if an artist featured on this show has a CD on Amazon, I will put a link to that CD in the show notes, and if you click on that link and buy the CD, you will not only support a great artist or band, but you will also help me pay for the web hosting for this show. (It's Liberated Syndication, so it won't take that many CDs, I promise...) I'm considering doing the same thing for iTunes, but I'm not so sure I want to promote DRM-wrapped music, even if it does support the artists. What do you guys think?

This week's featured artist is Bird York, one of the few singer-actresses I've heard who can really sing. Her song "In the Deep" is the featured song in the new movie Crash, starring Don Cheadle and Sandra Bullock. It's also on her excellent CD, The Velvet Hour.
